Dear Hillcrest Families,
Thank you to the family members and friends who joined us for All School Meeting today! We enjoyed some powerful presentations focused on the theme of Social Justice. Mrs. Prevett’s preschool students shared a poem titled Everybody Has a Name, Mrs. Lesenski’s kindergarten class presented a poem about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Miss Matrishon’s first graders shared artwork and writing about their families. Each of these presentations was connected to the social justice learning standards and the concepts of Identity, Justice, Diversity and Action. If you’re interested in learning more about these standards, you can check out the Teaching Tolerance website: https://www.tolerance.org/frameworks/social-justice-standards.

We’re excited to announce that Sarah Pirtle, a local artist and educator, will be joining us as an Artist in Residence in our first grade classrooms for several sessions between January and May. Ms. Pirtle will be connecting music and movement to the first grade science curriculum. This exciting project is a STARS Residency (Students and Teachers working with Artists, Scientists, and Scholars) funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. For information on some of Ms. Pirtle’s books for children and educators, check out this link: http://sarahpirtle.com/books.htm#LinkingUp

Please continue to send your students to school with ALL of their winter gear each day. A hat, mittens, jacket, snow pants and boots are essential for outdoor recess. And . . . if the current weather forecast is accurate, we should have plenty of snow on the playground next week!
Wishing you a wonderful weekend --
Sarah Burstein
