Dear Hillcrest Families,
Today is National School Lunch Hero Day. Normally, we would celebrate this day at Hillcrest with Thank You posters made by our students and Thank You songs sung by each grade level at the start of that day’s lunch. Given the school closure, we will have to express our thanks virtually to Mary Savinski and Kim Watroba, our Hillcrest cafeteria staff. I am so grateful for Mary and Kim and everything that they do to keep our Hillcrest students well fed at breakfast and lunch each day! You may not know this, but Mary and Kim greet each student by name every morning as they enter the breakfast line. They also know who prefers Skim Milk to Lowfat Milk and who prefers Cheerios to Cinnamon Toast Crunch. At lunch time, the friendly greetings are the same and they patiently encourage our students to try new healthy choices like roasted chickpeas or raw broccoli. Thank you, Mary and Kim!
Now that our school building is closed due to the pandemic, our entire district food services staff continues to focus on preparing breakfast and lunch for all of our students. Just as teaching and learning continue during the closure, so do school breakfast and lunch! Supporting our students goes beyond academics and we are so happy that food service is helping to promote student health and well-being during this challenging time. Our entire food service staff deserves a GIANT School Lunch Hero Shout-Out today! If your Hillcrest student would like to send a Thank You message to Mary or Kim, they can do so by emailing msavinski@grmsd.org or kimberly.watroba@gmrsd.org.
May has finally arrived and it looks like the weekend will bring some lovely springtime weather! I hope that you and your family can take a break from the many demands of the current situation to enjoy the outdoors. While parks and playgrounds are still closed, perhaps you can take a family walk, play some backyard games or encourage your little ones to help out with raking or planting. I am sure that everyone is looking for a break from school work and “grown-up work” and is ready for some fresh air!
Wishing you a wonderful weekend --
Sarah Burstein, Principal
