Dear Hillcrest Families,

This was a super-short school week – just three days!  Despite that, our Hillcrest students were busy in their classrooms.  Next week, we’ll have a relatively full week with an Early Release Day on Wednesday.  

A few important news items

  • Attached to your weekly email you will find a Winter Vaccine Clinic Flyer.  There are several upcoming clinics and the next one will be at Turners Falls High School on Monday, January 24th from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  Please check out the flyer for more details.

  • We are very happy to have welcomed some new staff members over the past several weeks:

    • Abigail Pease has joined us in the cafeteria.

    • Ashley Sicard has joined us as a paraprofessional.

    • Ramona LaTronica will be joining us as a Long Term Substitute covering for our School Librarian, Jessika Nadeau. Ms. Nadeau is getting ready to welcome a new baby to her family and will be on family leave for the rest of the school year. 

  • In an effort to add a little fun to our Fridays, Ms. Chanda Waryas Welles, one of our preschool teachers, has been inspired to create Fun Fridays.  Fun Fridays are completely optional, but all students are invited to join Ms. Chanda’s preschoolers in the spirit of the day.  Here are the upcoming themes:

    • Friday, February 4th – Wear something with a zipper

    • Friday, February 11th – Wear a shirt that features your favorite sports team or your favorite activity

    • Friday, February 18th – Wear mismatched socks

  • You may have heard from your kindergarten or first grade student that they had “recess in the parking lot.” This may sound strange, but it’s true! On occasion, the outside temps are warm enough for recess, but the K & 1 playground has iced over, making it unsafe for playing.  On those days, we do have recess in the Griswold Street parking lot which is empty of vehicles midday.  Students use sidewalk chalk, play with jump ropes, run around and sometimes climb on the snow mounds.  Wearing snow pants and snow boots is essential . . . no matter where recess happens!
