OCTOBER = KINDNESS AT SHEFFIELD

Kindness is choosing to do something that helps others or yourself. Kindness, or doing good, often means putting other people's needs before our own. It could be by holding open the door or inviting some to sit with you in the cafeteria.

This week, students in Ms. Lapan's classroom earned tickets for the following acts of kindness.

Angelo - Being nice and kind to the cafeteria team.

Jack - Being kind to a teacher.

JJ - Advocating for friends.

Hannah - Being a good friend.

Audrina - Caring for others.

Izzy - Advocating for friends.

Throughout the week, tickets were placed inside of a class bin. Today, each classroom pulled a name from the bin to win a "gold coin". These winners purchased a book from our new vending machine. Congratulations to everyone!

Trunk-or-Treat

We are happy to announce that we met the threshold to hold our event!!! Thank you to the many families who signed up to decorate their vehicle. A very important note is that the event is now NUT-FREE due to district policy. We are seeking candy donations to help supplement the families who are decorating their trunks. Please see our flier for NUT-Free candy suggestions. If you plan on trick-or-treating with your children, please RSVP using our form here. It's going to be a howlin' good time!

Teacher Appreciation

We appreciate the families who have already signed up to bring in snacks or needed items to help treat our teachers and staff during conference time. There are several items left if you are still interested in helping out. The sign up can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/5n976uh2. Items can be dropped off at the main office from Monday, October 17th - Wednesday, October 19th. Thank you!

ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL

Safety is our top priority!

Thank you for your patience and support as we increase the safety of our students during the arrival and dismissal process.

A reminder that those students arriving or departing by car - our drop off and pick up line is in front of Sheffield only. Please do not park on Crocker Ave! Cars will pull up to the front on the building (one-way only!) so that the passenger side of the cars will be lined up along the sidewalk. All students will exit the cars, on the passenger side only, in the "drop off/pick up zone" section only. In the afternoon, cars will line up in the same manner and teachers will allow your student to enter your car when you are parked in the zone.

A reminder that the school day begins at 8:30 am and ends at 3:15 pm. Half day dismissals are at noon.

Thank you again for your patience as we perfect our new routine.

PARENT/GUARDIAN-RUN WALKING SCHOOL BUS

Dear Hillcrest and Sheffield Parents and Guardians,

In the past school year, we have heard from several of you about challenges getting your children to school when they are not eligible for school bus services because you live within the 1.5 miles from your child’s school. If this is the case for you, we’d like to invite you, parents and guardians, to meet to discuss forming a Parent/Guardian-Run Walking School Bus, and we are working to connect you with each other to make this happen. Students who participate in the program will walk to school in groups led by walking school bus parent and guardian volunteers to arrive to school on time.

Program Benefits

  • Students get to school on time
  • Students get extra daily physical activity
  • Parents and guardians get peace of mind AND get to know others in their neighborhoods!

Potential Risks

  • Regular pedestrian safety risks include moving cars, crossing streets; students must follow the directions of the adult volunteers.

If you are interested in either volunteering or having your child participate in this program, please attend a meeting with me and other parents and guardians on Wednesday 10/26 at 9:30 at the Town Hall at 1 Avenue A in the 2nd floor meeting room (there is an elevator if needed) to discuss the details together in order to make this happen.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about this, please contact me at either stacey.langknecht@gmrsd.org or 413-863-7473.

Thank you and I hope to see lots of you at the meeting!

Stacey Langknecht
